The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a new date for the implementation of the Access to Higher Education Act, otherwise known as the Students Loan Law, recently assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
Speaking at the 29th National Economic Summit recently, President Tinubu said the loan programme “must commence” in January 2024, adding that there would be no more industrial actions in the tertiary institutions.
President Tinubu said “the loan programme must commence in January 2024, there would be no more industrial actions in the tertiary institutions. By January 2024, the new Students Loan Programme must commence”.
“By January 2024, the new Students Loan Programme must commence. To the future of our children and students, we are saying no more strikes,” Mr. President stated.
While speaking further on the country’s economy at the summit, President Tinubu mulled the creation of an economy with adequate consumer credit.
He said: “There must be consumer credit; the scheme will have to come into effect as soon as possible…We cannot talk about anti-corruption when you have to look for cash to buy a car when there’s no mortgages for home ownership. Where do you expect a civil servant to have N3 million or N5 million for houses without corruption”.
The President reiterated the Federal Government commitment to make education an enviable enterprise and ensure the challenges besetting the sector be addressed for national development.
