A.        SUMMARY OF PANEL’S REPORT

1. The philosophy and objectives of the programme were not defined in the student handbook.

2. Curriculum is not fully adequate for the programme as the following core courses were omitted in some level of study: PHY 202, PHY 206, PHY 311, PHY 418, PHY 504, PHY 513, PHY 527, PHY 529 and a few others were omitted from the curriculum.

3. The curriculum does not contain any innovative course

4. Interaction between the panel members and students of the programme reveals the students have not acquired the relevant hard and soft skills expected of or prescribed for their levels.

5. The internal quality assurance mechanism does not exist.

6. 30.8% of academic staff do not have PhD. degree programme.

7. The Department is run by unqualified HOD who is lecturer I by rank to head the department.

8. 84.6% of academic staff and none of the non-teaching staff have not benefited from staff Development Programme in the last three years.

9. Some equipment in the Physics laboratory were obsolete and there was no running water, alternative power supply and waste bins.

10. Classroom equipment and furniture are not well maintained.

11. Some academic office lack refrigerators, visitors’ chairs, bookshelves and file cabinet.

12. The Environment is bush, not well kept and with no running water.

13. Funding for the programme is inadequate.

14. There is no multidisciplinary approach to research and collaborations.

 

1. The Philosophy and objectives of the programme should be clearly defined and to be in tandem with BMAS and CCMAS.

2. The curriculum should be revised to include the core courses PHY 202, PHY 206, PHY 311, PHY 418, PHY 504, PHY 513, PHY 527, and PHY 529 for the programme.

3. The University should ensure that the curriculum is enriched by the addition of at least four innovative courses without exceeding the maximum credit load.

4. The University should ensure that the hard and soft skills acquisition relevant to the programme are impacted to students.

5. The University should ensure that internal quality assurance mechanism exists and effective.

6. The University should ensure that all academic staff have PhD degree programme.

7. The University should ensure that the Department is run by a qualified academic staff (senior lecturer and above).

8. The University should ensure that all academic staff and non-teaching staff benefit from the staff development programme.

9. All essential laboratory equipment should be provided with running water and alternative power supply for the programme.

10. Equipment and classroom furniture should be well maintained.

11. Well-equipped offices should be provided for the academic staff on the programme.

12. The University should ensure that environment is safety and comply with the environmental sanitation law.

13. The programme should be adequately funded.

14. The University should ensure that there is a multidisciplinary approach to research and collaboration in the programme.

 

The total score for the programme is 60.80%. It scored 22 (59.46%)  in Academic Matters, 24 (69%) in Staffing, 11 (40.74%) in Physical Facilities, 16 (88.89%) in Library. The programme scored 1 (33.33%) in Funding, 1 (33.33%) in Research and Collaborations and 1 (50.00%) in Employers’ Rating. Based on the fact that the programme scored less than 70% in any of the four core components (Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities and Library), the Panel recommended  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme.

B.    APPROVAL BY THE COMMISSION

Based on further analysis of the report, the Commission upholds the recommendation of  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme
